Abstract
“The ideas in the minds of men correspond to the word merit, shall, as everyone knows, be infinitely different: they change the subject, grade, purpose, measuring not only between nations and peoples, but likewise between classes and classes of the same city” (Melchiorre Gioja, Del Merito e Delle Ricompense).“Success is an ugly thing. Men are deceived by its false resemblances to merit.... They confound the brilliance of the firmament with the star-shaped footprints of a duck in the mud” (Victor Hugo, Les Misérables).
