Abstract

Uncertainty in venture capital investment is shaped not only by startup characteristics, but also by financing conditions, sociocognitive cues, and investor-level factors. This article develops a framework in which venture capital timing is understood relative to an underlying technology’s validation trajectory, that is, the broader process through which the technology becomes more visible, interpretable, and financeable for investors. This perspective provides a common frame of reference for comparing investments across otherwise very different technologies and suggests that earlier positions along the trajectory may offer access to more uncertain but higher-upside opportunities, that VC firms differ systematically in their typical timing, and that this heterogeneity is shaped by both funding conditions and investor prominence. Empirically, we operationalize this framework by using Google Trends as a broad observable marker of public visibility and, with it, a tractable proxy for where a technology stands along its validation trajectory. We then position more than 64,000 U.S. venture capital investments relative to technology-specific visibility trajectories spanning more than 100 emerging technology domains. We show that startups funded earlier along these trajectories are associated with significantly higher success rates, that VC firms differ meaningfully in their typical investment timing, that worsening funding conditions shift investment toward technologies further along their validation trajectories, and that greater reputational prominence is associated with earlier investment timing. These findings highlight investment timing relative to domain validation as a distinct dimension of entrepreneurial finance and provide a scalable framework for analyzing how capital is allocated across emerging technologies.
