Abstract

Examined the contribution of 3 measures of technology to the prediction of employee attitude. 201 employees (excluding managerial and supervisory staff) in 19 organizational units completed a questionnaire in which they described their jobs and attitudes toward their jobs. A global measure of technology was derived at the department level through interviews with department managers. Technology measured through individual level descriptions of job characteristics was the best predictor of employee attitude, whereas departmental classification of technology based on interviews with management was judged the least equivocal predictor. Aggregation of job characteristics at the department level explained substantially less variance in employee attitude than individual-level job characteristics but did not alter the pattern of relationships between job characteristics and employee attitude. The importance of evaluating the effects of different levels of analysis in organizational research is discussed. (17 ref) (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)
