Abstract

On the basis of A. K. Korman's (1970, 1971) "consistency" theory of work motivation, it was hypothesized that job performance was correlated with work satisfaction for workers high in self-esteem, but not for those low in self-esteem. A sample of 93 meat-processing workers was subdivided on the basis of 2 measures of self-esteem, and supervisory ratings of performance were correlated with Job Descriptive Index measures of satisfaction. As predicted, self-esteem exercised a significant moderating effect on correlations between performance and intrinsic satisfaction, but not on correlations between performance and extrinsic satisfaction.
