Abstract
In Exp I, the hit rate (the percentage of accidents occurring on critical days) for 410 industrial accidents was above chance level when the data were scored by the conventional, visual inspection method but did not differ from chance when an error-free, numeric method was used. Exp II showed that the bias in the visual inspection was due to the scoring of looking for hits rather than due to bias in favor of the experimental hypothesis.
