Abstract

170 undergraduates were trained with 1 of 3 sets of instructions, then viewed a 45-min videotape of a 6-person leaderless group discussion. The 1st set of instructions simply explained the task (control); Set 2 encouraged careful observation and recording of specific behavior; Set 3 included the instructions given in Set 2 plus training on the avoidance of 8 systematic errors of observation. Observer accuracy was measured by an objective test of behavioral events in the videotape. Ss trained under Set 3 were significantly more accurate in observation than Ss trained under Set 2; both of these groups were significantly more accurate than the control group.
