Abstract
Studied the extent of individual need fulfillment of career Army officers at 3 different levels in the organizational hierarchy. The relative importance which the Ss attach to the needs was also investigated. 504 officers in the ranks of captain through colonel responded to a mailed questionnaire. Conclusions were: (1) perceived deficiencies in need fulfillment tend to increase at successively lower levels in the organizational hierarchy, (2) need-fulfillment deficiencies are greatest for the needs in the ego and self-actualization categories, and (3) the deficiencies which appear to have the most deleterious effect on the accomplishment of Army goals are those associated with the opportunity to exercise authority and the comparative amount of recognition received in command and staff positions.
