Abstract

Reviews the book, Man on his nature by Sir Charles Sherrington (1941). The reviewer states that in this book, Sherrington attacks the problem of the nature of mind from the frame of reference of the physiologist, and one finds here both richness and dross. The reviewer has never read a more fascinating account of the basic concepts of biological thinking--of microscopic life ("life in little"), of the nature of cells ("factories of a furious chemistry"), of ontological development.
