Abstract

Reviews the book "Comments and Cases on Human Relations" by F. K. Berrien (see record 1951-06194-000 ). The approach in this book is that the psychology of human behavior can be taught in the form of "human relations." The author indicates the objective of the book as, "I think of my audience as being composed of college students and members of adult education classes-not teachers or experts. At the same time I have tried to 'keep the cookies on the middle shelves'--high enough to require some stretching but still within reach. This is no attempt to build a system or a grand theory of human relations. I have tried, however, to develop a picture of human relations problems in a self-consistent matter around the theme of a need for social harmony and self-actualization." There can be no quarrel with the purpose or intent of the author in devising this volume. However, a book of this kind, which is designed for adult educational groups, probably would have been better written if it had been more simply written. If the study group in "human relations" is going to spend a good portion of its time in developing a theory of "human relations" and "human behavior" prior to the time they are going to use the case studies, then this book in itself is incomplete. The book is well annotated, and reference is constantly made to the most recent literature. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)
