Guidance policy and practice
Journal of Applied Psychology · Volume 34 · Issue 2
Abstract
Reviews Guidance policy and practice by Robert H. Mathewson (see record 1950-01180-000 ). This book represents the thinking of a guidance specialist who has had long experience as a practitioner at both adolescent and adult levels, and who has given considerable time to the training of graduate students at a strategic time in the development of guidance and of professional psychology. Although the book is described as uneven, it is on the whole thoughtful, penetrating, and constructive. This reviewer focuses comments on major contributions, the strongest of which is Mathewson's reiteration of the developmental nature of guidance. The second contribution singled out is the discussion of the trend toward unity in the field of guidance. Overall, the volume is seen as an important contribution to thinking on the nature, functions, and organization of guidance. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)
