Neuroticism of institution versus non-institution children
Journal of Applied Psychology · 1936 · Volume 21 · Issue 4
Abstract
The Brown personality inventory was given to groups of institutionalized children (200 orphans), to groups of several hundred children living with their parents in the general population, and to a group of children in the general population whose parents were of low socio-economic status (100 boys). It was found that the neuroticism of institution children (mean score, boys = 23.93; girls = 29.07) was greater than that of children who lived with their parents in the general population (mean score, boys = 17.34; girls = 18.36) while there was a similarity between them and the other group of low socio-economic status (mean score = 22.75).
