Abstract

The subjects for this study were a group of female employees at three supervisory levels selected from 8 offices of a Michigan utilities company. Each employee was asked how much authority and responsibility she had and how much authority she delegated. These opinions were then compared with what the respondent's superior said was the actual case. Comparisons are made within and between these judgments, and the differences between respondents' and superiors' opinions are related to other measures. It was found that responsibility and authority were not estimated to be equal, but most subjects believed their responsibility exceeded their authority.
