Abstract

The speed and accuracy with which 48 pilots could use mockups of 8 different VOR aircraft instrument displays to solve typical navigation problems were measured. The instrument and airline pilots made fewer errors than the non-instrument pilots, but there were no significant differences in time scores. Pictorial displays (graphic representation of actual spatial relations) were superior to symbolic displays (information in terms of dial readings, needle deflections, and numbers).
