Part-time employment for the older workers
Journal of Applied Psychology · 1950 · Volume 35 · Issue 6
Abstract
Through the cooperation of the employment department of a large midwestern department store, the writer had access to the personnel records of some 3000 "extra" employees or persons not on the regular payroll. It was found that in general the older the worker the longer he was available. Women extra sales people 30 years old or younger were available an average of 103 work days as compared with a 412 day average for those over 60. Another finding was that wage increases (made on merit) were obtained by older extra workers more often than by the younger ones. Of the extra sales women under 31, 11% obtained an increase, as compared with 57% of those over 60. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)
