Abstract

The concepts of validity and objectivity of tests and rating scales are discussed. Three stages of validation of an aptitude test are described: (1) giving test to experienced workers; (2) comparison of test scores of practicing members of a profession with non-members; (3) giving tests to novices and later determining the extent to which they have developed practical ability. It is suggested that the concept of validity be widened to include measures of achievement as well as prognosis, proficiency as well as aptitude, as functions of the rating scales.
