Employee attitudes and their relation to morale
Journal of Applied Psychology · 1943 · Volume 28 · Issue 4
Abstract
A preliminary scale of 53 groups—427 statements—was constructed from a large number of employee statements pertaining to job attitudes. The statements were then rated by 200 supervisors. Use of the percentile graph in statistical treatment of the data resulted in the formation of a 17-group (job-segment) final scale in which each statement had a scale value ranging from 0 to 10; this value indicated the degree of morale expressed by each statement. Forty-two full-time federal employees were instructed to select one statement from each group as being representative of their attitudes. The results showed much variability. A low correlation obtained between mean scores and job-segment scores. The author concludes that employees' attitudes toward their work can be measured in numerical values.
