Review of The Fundamentals of Statistics
Journal of Applied Psychology · Volume 9 · Issue 4
Abstract
Reviews the books, The Fundamentals of Statistics by L. L. Thurstone (see record 1925-10323-000 ); and Statistical Method in Educational Measurement by Arthur S. Otis (see record 1925-10321-000 ); and A Primer of Graphics and Statistics for Teachers by Harold Rugg (see record 1926-10651-000 ). Of the three books under consideration, Otis and Rugg were written primarily for the profession of education while Thurstone is a more general treatment, although the editor--O'Shea--in his introduction assumes that the book will be read chiefly by teachers. Otis and Thurstone are considerably more elaborate discussions than is Rugg, probably occupying, so far as reading difficulty is concerned, a position about midway between Rugg's two books--his Statistical Methods Applied to Education and his Primer. Each of the three books naturally possesses some unique features. With the appearance of these three books it should no longer be necessary for educators to be unacquainted with elementary statistical analyses and interpretations.
