Abstract

Reviews the book, Helmholtz's Treatise on Physiological Optics by Edited by James P. C. Southall (1924). The reviewer states that at a meeting of the Optical Society of America in 1921 it was proposed to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the birth of Helmholtz "in a more useful and substantial way by bringing out the long-delayed English translation of the Physiological Optics, and accordingly a special committee was appointed to have charge of this business "Let it be said at once that the Optical Society, and more especially Professor Southall and his collaborators in the arduous task of translation and editing, have performed a notable and valuable service by publishing in English "one of the four or five greatest monuments of human genius in the scientific line." This edition was expanded to nearly double the size of the original by the addition of new material in the field of physiological optics contributed by the editors.
