Abstract

Reviews the book, Facts and Theories of Psychoanalysis by Ives Hendrick (1934). "Psychoanalysis is the science of the unconscious functions of the mind and personality, developed by Sigmund Freud and his students." Thus in the first sentence of his book, Dr. Hendrick completely delimits the field he is going to discuss. In the preface he says the purpose of the book is "informative, to assist those with an intelligent interest to understand how the analyst himself regards his own work, and why." It is not for the reviewer to question the merits of the field delimited, but to judge how well the purpose of the book is fulfilled. In answer to the question "Has this book fulfilled its purpose?" the reviewer, at least, would unhesitatingly answer, "Yes." For a brief, non-technical presentation of a field which has a formidable literature, much of it controversial, this book is an excellent piece of work.
