Review of Investigations in the Hygiene of Reading
Journal of Applied Psychology · Volume 12 · Issue 1
Abstract
Reviews the book, Investigations in the Hygiene of Reading by James Herbert Blackhurst (see record 1927-02280-000 ). This investigation was undertaken by Professor Blackhurst in an attempt to answer certain fundamental questions in regard to the printing of reading materials for children. As he says in his preface, it seems amazing that so little attention should have been paid to the hygiene of reading. Both possible impairment of vision and decrease in reading efficiency are involved. The present study brings to bear true scientific evidence in an important field which changes previous conceptions noticeably. The findings are not in agreement with those of previous investigations, many of which are reported in the historical review given in chapter 1 of the book.
