[Review of the book Education during adolescence
Journal of Applied Psychology · Volume 4 · Issue 2-3
Abstract
Reviews the book, Education during adolescence by Ransom A. Mackie (1920). This book is intended as a general introduction to the principles of secondary education, and is based on previous works by G. Stanley Hall. The first chapter is a resume of Hall's general ideas on the subject. The second chapter deals with the six-year high school curriculum, the third with principles of election. The remaining three chapters deal with the "Required Subjects," namely, Social Studies, English, and History, and consist almost entirely of loosely connected quotations from Hall, Elliott, and reports of committees of the National Education Association. With the present shortage of labor and material, this kind of literary hero-worship is greatly to be deplored, even if it were accompanied by valuable original offerings, as is not the case in the book before us.
