Abstract

Reviews the book, Department Stores, Recent Policies, Costs and Profits by Boris Emmet (1930). In recent years greater attention has been given by accountants and business men generally to the subject of merchandising or distribution costs. Professor Emmet's book is, therefore, very timely. The principles brought out in this book apply to the whole field of distribution, including Chain Stores, Wholesale and Retail Establishments as well as Department Stores. The illustrations are, however, drawn from the Department Store business and the standards developed are useful chiefly in Department Store management. The book is well written and should serve as a challenge to the department store manager of today to improve his accounting and management methods so that he may be in position to meet successfully changing conditions in the field of merchandising.
