Abstract

Over 6000 children between Grades 3 and 12 were given the Lehman Play Quiz and asked to indicate from a list of 200 activities those in which they had participated during the preceding week, and those in which they participated alone. The results show that the characteristics of each play period develop gradually, and that social participation varies more from individual to individual than from age to age. The authors point out the diversity of opinion which exists among various investigators who have attempted to make classification schemes of growth and play periods, and say that this is due to the fact that the investigators overlook the complexity of play behavior and interpret certain aspects observable at certain periods to be characteristic of the total phenomenon.
