Aesthetic judgment of school children
Journal of Applied Psychology · 1917 · Volume 2 · Issue 3
Abstract
Studies the ranking of a series of pictures according to the aesthetic value of the pictures. 18 groups of grammar school boys and girls (grades three to eight) were included in the study, with 20 Ss in each group. The average position of each card was calculated and each value was correlated with every other value. Higher correlations were found between classes of children who were nearer neighbors. The experiment was repeated on two other groups of 20 and 22 school and college students from other cities. There was a high uniformity in the group taste of all the grammar school classes for boys as well as girls. The group taste of the grammar school and the college Ss were opposite to each other, due to the age difference. Within a group, girls agreed more closely than boys, though between groups, the converse was true. Boys agreed more in their dislikes than in their likes.
