Numerals versus words for efficiency in reading
Journal of Applied Psychology · 1927 · Volume 12 · Issue 2
Abstract
The purpose of the study reported was to investigate the influence of the use of numerals, in comparison with printed word symbols for the numerals, on the speed of reading arithmetical problems. A modified form of the Dodge apparatus for photographing eye movements was used with 4 subjects; the direct mirror method was used with 40 subjects. The material read consisted of the statement and a solution of 4 arithmetical problems. The results from the two groups were in agreement on the point that the reading of number words involved more fixations and a longer reading time than the reading of the numerals.
