Abstract

Focuses on the methods and the means used by stutterers to start their own speech. A 'starter' consists of any invented motion or action used by the patient to help his speech action. Analyses have shown that these were movements of the head, arms, body and face. Out of 123 patients studied, 45 were using starters of various types. The momentary efficiency of the starters consisted merely in diversion of attention. This just sidetracked the stutterers but was not a cure. Their failure to cure was due to the lack of any profound development of visualization process. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
