The analysis of trade ability
Journal of Applied Psychology · 1918 · Volume 3 · Issue 4
Abstract
Discusses the testing of abilities for selection of personnel for a particular job. The first step in formulating a trade ability test is to frame useful definitions of the given trade. Information about job requirements can reliably be obtained through the observation of the abilities of individual tradesmen. Tabulating these abilities, then, requires a definite basis of analysis. The Trade Test Division considers trade ability as made up of a group of elementary abilities, which are of 2 main sorts: Intellectual and motor. Trade abilities range from that of novice to expert, as learning progresses. The development of trade ability can be studied by listing elementary abilities manifested at each stage of learning. Once the elements are classified, tests can be constructed to either separate individuals on either side of a point, or at several points along a range of abilities.
