National conference on Americanization in industries
Journal of Applied Psychology · 1918 · Volume 3 · Issue 3
Abstract
Discusses the assimilation of the foreign-born population into national life, and suggestions on the process, as part of the Conference of Americanization Workers, held by the United States Department of the Interior. Voluntary attendance of non-English speaking workers is preferred to compulsory attendance in English classes held by industries. When these classes are held during working hours, the hourly rate should be paid, and when they are held after working hours, no payment need be made. The cooperation of public schools is desirable. However, in some communities the public school system is not ready to assume the responsibility, and in some they fail to accomplish the work undertaken. Suggestions for an Americanization program include general propaganda, group mass meetings, training for citizenship, arrangement for filing papers in court, and welcome to citizenship as a social event in the organization.
