Abstract

Studied information sources used by industrial managers in making promotion decisions to determine (a) the preferences of managers for sources of information typically available and (b) to what extent the professed preferences for information sources were used in making simulated promotion decisions. 75 male line managers participated in 2 training sessions, 1 wk apart. At each session, they rated 5 information sources of the Personnel Decision Simulation and were observed using those sources in a simulated exercise (selecting 1 of 3 salesmen for sales manager). Although both stated preferences and observed preferences were reliably measured, there was little agreement between the stated preferences for information sources and the sources used in making the simulated promotion decisions.
