Abstract

In a study with 150 first-line supervisors in a Japanese manufacturing company, the relationships between supervisory motivation and the consideration and structure aspects of supervisory behavior were examined using expectancy-theory models. Ss were given a questionnaire containing 115 items for measures of effort-outcome expectancy (E) and valence (V) of the outcome for consideration and structure. Outcome for both consideration and structure correlated significantly both with self-descriptions and subordinate descriptions of the Ss' behavior, but curvilinearly with the latter. The diminishing effect of the consideration motivation and the accelerative effect of the structure motivation on supervisory behavior are discussed for their implications in effective organization of supervisory training.
