Abstract

Estimating the Circular Probable Error (CEP) is of considerable importance in weapon-testing and other technological problems. In this paper four estimates of the CEP, based on the mean deviation, the range and the mean successive difference are suggested. Their variances are calculated for the sample size 2 to 20. These estimates are compared for efficiency with the maximum likelihood estimate and with other estimates suggested recently by Moranda [3]. The relative merits of the proposed estimates are discussed and the situations in which they are appropriate are mentioned.
