Abstract
SUMMARY Linear functions of trinomial frequencies, generated by gauges, provide simple statistics for testing hypotheses. A computationally easy method for determining the necessary parameters and coefficients, which is nearly optimal in the sense of maximizing power is suggested. Guidelines for the use of a normal approximation are given. Tests for the mean of a normal variate are discussed.
