An Analytic System Model for Organization Theory
Academy of Management Journal · 1965 · Volume 8 · Issue 3
Abstract
This paper represents an effort to synthesize the work of philosophers of science with regard to teleological or adaptive systems. Methodological in focus, the intent is to identify a set of logical properties inherent in theories pertaining to organizations. This set of properties is referred to as a general analytic model for teleological systems and is construed to have heuristic value for the analysis of bureaucratic organizations as well as for development of a general theory appropriate to these organizations. The concepts of goal directedness, plasticity, interdependence of parts, system persistence and system change are examined and an explication of their relevance and interrelationship is attempted.
