Abstract

Current research on the measurement of “control” or “influence” in organizational functioning is critically examined. Theoretical and methodological questions are raised and a revised method of analysis is presented and tested. It is concluded that the degree of concordance of perceptions of the organizational control structure is an important variable, and that the amount and distribution of control are necessary but not sufficient measures in analysis of the control structure.
