Abstract

The article describes some characteristics of the firm, employees and community that influence union organizations in the U.S. According to the author, there are characteristics of the particular firm, community, and employees which greatly influence union election results, including age, race, sex, length of service and education. The author says these are some of the major factors that affect an employee’s decision to vote for a union. He also states that an employee’s need for acceptance is related to the size, previous experience with the union, and other characteristics of the community. The author believes there is less chance of having an employee vote for a union in a smaller community without previous experience with collective bargaining.
