Abstract

A laboratory experiment was conducted on profiles of performance: high, average, or low; stable or variable; ascending or descending. Level of performance was found to be the most important determinant of performance evaluations and several other personnel decisions (such as salary increase). Stability of performance was less important. Ascending performance was viewed as more favorable than descending performance.
