Abstract

The article presents a study which examined the nature of the managerial work of local government managers in New York City. A questionnaire was sent to all New York City managers to determine the managers’ managerial tasks. About 95 percent of the questionnaires were returned from managers employed in 60 different agencies ranging in size. Analysis of the tasks showed 57 common managerial activities that could be divided into six categories; supervision of employees, interpersonal relations, information management, analysis of data, change initiating, and monitoring.
