Abstract

The article refers to “Is There Anything ‘New’ in Management?,” by Robert M. Fulmer and Daniel A. Wren, and describes the changes that a hypothetical manager, “Rip Van Winkle,” would find after a 40-year sleep. The changes in context and content--or the larger environment and the manager's job--include: socio-environmental trends in social responsibility, occupational safety, and consumerism; and the management-by-objectives theory, which was preceded by “the law of the situation” that was proposed by Mary Parker Follett in the 1920s.
